Two years ago, the CBP said in collaboration with the Canadian privacy watchdog that Whatsapp violated the privacy of hundreds of millions of people , that both the Canadian and the Dutch law was violated.
There was particular criticism of the fact that the app requires access to the entire address book of the user, so that not only the numbers of Whatsapp users, but also contact details of people who do not use Whatsapp were stored.
The service has now, at the insistence of CBP implemented a number of changes which the data is better protected. The phone numbers are now stored encrypted so that they are limited to use. They are stored separately and only has a limited number of developers access to the data.
According to CBP has Whatsapp after adjustments now “a legal basis to process the data.”
