Apple’s iOS mobile operating system is doing well in Europe. This is at the expense of the market share of Android.
This is evident from market research Kantar, the market in the five largest European (Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy and Spain) markets examined in the second quarter of 2016. The Netherlands is not included in the market.
27 percent of smartphone buyers in the second quarter switched from an Android device to iOS device. In the United States the percentage is much lower, at 9 percent.
Moreover, the market researcher points out that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will probably sell well for now, after the unveiling of the next iPhone on September 9th. “32 percent of the sales of the iPhone 5S were generated only after the launch of the iPhone six,” said Carolina Milanesi from research main Kantar.
Despite the consumer is getting on Android still by far the largest player in the smartphone market in the five major European markets. In Germany, for example, Android has a market share of 73.7 percent, versus 15.2 percent for iOS. In the UK the differences are slightly smaller, with 54.4 percent to 32.7 percent for Android and iOS.
The European smartphone market is becoming increasingly saturated, Kantar says further. The percentage of consumers who bought a smartphone for the first time fell to 25 percent, compared with 29 percent in the same period a year earlier.
